Leather Care Guide

Every KIXWAY handbag is crafted from genuine cowhide leather, prized for its strength, rich texture, and ability to develop a beautiful natural patina over time. Proper care will keep your bag looking refined and help it last for years. Please follow this guide to clean, protect, and store your cowhide leather handbag correctly.

1. About Cowhide Leather

Cowhide is a durable, full-grain or top-grain leather known for its natural texture and strength. Depending on the finish, your bag may have a smooth matte surface, a lightly textured grain, or a saffiano (cross-hatched) finish. All finishes are still genuine leather and should be cared for using the general principles below.

2. Do Not Wash With Water or Detergent

Genuine cowhide leather should never be machine washed, hand washed with water and soap, or submerged. Water and detergents strip the leather's natural oils and can cause:

  • Discoloration or watermarks
  • Stiffening or cracking
  • Permanent loss of the leather's natural softness and finish

If your bag gets wet, blot it immediately with a clean, dry, soft cloth — do not rub — and allow it to air dry naturally, away from direct heat or sunlight.

3. Everyday Cleaning

  1. Wipe the bag regularly with a soft, dry microfiber cloth to remove dust and surface dirt.
  2. For light marks, very lightly dampen a clean cloth (not soaking wet) and gently wipe the affected area, then immediately dry with a separate dry cloth.
  3. Avoid excessive rubbing, which can wear down the leather's surface over time.

4. Deeper Cleaning and Stains

  1. Use a cleaner made specifically for genuine leather — never household soap, alcohol-based cleaners, or baby wipes.
  2. Apply the cleaner to a soft cloth first, never directly onto the bag, and test on a small, hidden area before wider use.
  3. Gently wipe in circular motions, then buff dry with a clean cloth.
  4. For oil-based stains, blot immediately with a dry cloth and allow the leather to absorb naturally — do not apply water, which can spread the stain.

5. Conditioning

Cowhide leather benefits from periodic conditioning to prevent it from drying out or cracking:

  • Apply a quality leather conditioner every 3–6 months, or sooner if you notice the leather feeling dry or stiff.
  • Apply a small amount to a soft cloth and work it into the leather in gentle, circular motions.
  • Wipe away any excess and allow the bag to air dry naturally before use.

6. Protecting Against the Elements

  • Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can fade and dry out the leather.
  • Keep away from excessive heat sources (radiators, car interiors, direct sun through glass).
  • Avoid high humidity and damp environments, which can encourage mold or mildew.
  • Keep away from perfume, alcohol, and ink, which can permanently stain cowhide leather.

7. Storage

  • Store your bag in its original dust bag when not in use, away from direct sunlight and moisture.
  • Stuff the bag gently with soft tissue paper to help it hold its shape.
  • Store upright rather than flat, and avoid placing heavy items on top of it.
  • Avoid storing in sealed plastic bags, which trap moisture and can damage the leather over time.

8. When to See a Professional

For deep stains, significant scuffing, or valuable pieces, we recommend taking your bag to a professional leather cleaning or restoration specialist rather than attempting to treat it at home. Improper home cleaning methods can cause damage that isn't always reversible.
